Stop Rescuing: Let Silence Do the Work

The 7-second rule and what to do with your face while you wait. Rescuing is not coaching.

If you fill the pause, you just answered your own question. The session architecture only works if there is air in it.

The 7-Second Rule

Ask. Close your mouth. Count seven in your head. Look at them, not your notes. If they squirm, stay. The first sentence after the squirm is usually the real one.

This is the same muscle as the discovery close. Silence is not cruelty. Rescuing is.

What to Do With Your Face

Unclench your jaw. Don’t nod them toward the answer you want. Hands still. If you must move, write their last word. Writing is not talking.

Silence

Where Coaches Break

  • Softening the question with a second question. Now they have a multiple-choice test.
  • Smiling-and-nodding so hard they feel rushed to please you.
  • Jumping in because the group got quiet. Groups need the same seven seconds. Boundaries include not doing their thinking.

The 3-Minute Action

In the next session, ask one question and count to seven on your fingers under the desk. If you talk first, you failed the drill. Do it again.
