Breakout Rooms That Aren’t Awkward
Prompt, timebox, harvest. Awkward breakouts are underspecified prompts.

Awkward breakouts are not a Zoom problem. They’re an underspecified prompt. The tools will not save a mushy ask. Use the same bones as the circle.
The Three Specs
- Prompt — one question they can answer in two minutes. “What did you try?” not “share whatever.”
- Timebox — two minutes each, visible. You broadcast a 30-second warning.
- Harvest — one sentence back in the room. Not a recap of both people.
This is pair work, not a second 1:1-to-group lecture. If someone is going quiet in the large room, pairs often thaw them. You still harvest. You don’t spy.
How to Launch
Say the prompt twice. Put it in chat. Then open rooms. Do not add “and also if you have time…”
Where Coaches Break
- “Discuss the content.” That’s a book club.
- Skipping harvest. Then the pair work never happened in public.
The 3-Minute Action
Write tomorrow’s breakout prompt in one sentence. Add the timebox. Add the harvest question. If you cannot, cancel the breakout.
